Sunday Discussion
No Looking Back
Transition:
In last week’s text, Peter addressed the sufficiency of Christ’s death for sin, his proclamation to the spirits in prison, his resurrection, and his ascension and exaltation.
Check Point:
Would anyone like to share something they worked on from last week’s discussion?
Context:
In this week’s text, Peter commands believers to adopt the same attitude Jesus had when suffering for righteousness. He also describes the world’s response when one no longer participates in worldly norms.
Opening Questions:
- What grade were you in when you started giving up childish things? What did you give up and why?
- Describe a time when you had to give an account to a parent or teacher for something you did. What were you feeling in that moment and how did you respond?
Scripture/Storying: 1 Peter 4:1-6
Discipleship Questions:
- What is the Holy Spirit teaching you through this story? How does it impact the way you think and live?
- What is challenging to you about adopting Jesus’s attitude when you suffer for righteousness sake? Why do you feel this is challenging? How will you arm yourself to respond like Christ when suffering comes?
- Why is living your remaining time on earth for the will of God significant to you? How will you make the best use of your remaining time on earth living for the will of God? How would you instruct a new believer to make the most use of their remaining time for the will of God? Why would you choose to instruct in this way?
- What unhelpful approaches have you seen Christians take toward those whose lifestyle resembles the actions in verse 3? Why do you feel these approaches are unhelpful? How is the Holy Spirit leading you to respond to someone you know personally, who lives the lifestyle depicted in verse 3, the next time you see them?
- After you came to Christ, what desires started to change in you? Were the changes gradual or immediate? Share an example if you have one and what you learned along the way.
- Describe a time when friends, family, or acquaintances were puzzled by your refusal to participate in worldly norms. What were you feeling during that encounter? How would you disciple someone who is frequently maligned for their refusal to participate in worldly norms?
